International Workshop on Earthquake Engineering
29th -31st July, 2016

The Institution of Engineers Pakistan, Karachi Centre in collaboration with NED University of Engineering and Technology arranged an International Workshop on Earthquake Engineering, from 29th-31st July, 2016.

The Workshop started from recitation of Holy Quran.

Professor Syed Tanvir Wasti, Professor Emeritus in the Civil Engineering Department at Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey, and Prof. Dr. Polat Gulkan, Former President of the International Association for Earthquake Engineering (IAEE) conducted the Workshop.

Engr. Sohail Bashir, Vice-Chairman, IEP Karachi Centre introduced the Workshop Trainers.

Engr. Prof. Dr. S.F.A. Rafeeqi, Chairman, IEP Karachi Centre presented the welcome address. He acknowledged and praised the outstanding efforts of Engr. Khalid Mirza, Member Central Council, and Engr. Sohail Bashir for taking very keen interest in organizing this workshop apart from a very valuable coordinating support from NED University of Engineering and Technology. The workshop focused on the following topics:

Introduction to Earthquakes
- Dynamic Response of Buildings: Analysis and Design for Seismic Loads
- Response Spectra Earthquake Damage Evaluation and Assessment
- Case Study: Bingol Earthquake 2003
- Structural Rehabilitation – Classical
- Examples of Post-seismic Structural Rehabilitation
- Rehabilitation of non-engineered (masonry) structures
- Current Approaches to Structural Rehabilitation (CFRP, etc.)
- Base Isolation Techniques
- Introduction to ASCE (Seismic Regulations and Recommendations)
- Seismic Assessment and Rehabilitation of Historic Structures
- An overview of some recent Earthquakes


Video films on the following titles was shown as a part of the presentations:

The workshop concluded on 31st August, 2016, the concluding remarks were given by Engr. Sarosh Hashmat Lodi. He appreciated the efforts put up by the, Chairman, IEP Karachi Centre and Engr. Sohail Bashir.

Engr. Prof. Dr. S.F.A. Rafeeqi, Chairman, IEP Karachi Centre, Engr. Ayaz Mirza, Secretary IEP Karachi Centre accompanied with Engr. Sohail Bashir, presented the shields to the Workshop Trainers.

The event formally came to an end with the vote of thanks by Engr. Ayaz Mirza, Secretary, IEP Karachi Centre.
